90 Seconds

Detroit-based WM photographer Brian Kelly has been in Grand Rapids, Michigan for the ArtPrize events. He’s been making beautiful 90-second videos about the artists who have entered this unusual competition, which matches artists with venues online. Winners are selected by audience votes.
Recently, Brian linked to the videos he’s done of artists who are now in the top 10. I was particularly interested by the video with Young Kim:
and with Beili Lu:
You can see more comprehensive lists of these videos on his Tumblr page.
Brian has found an environment in Grand Rapids that is very welcoming to creative people. He describes an encounter with a city bus:
Last night I was shooting on the corner of one of the busiest intersections in Grand Rapids at Fulton and Division. A bus driver pulled up to the intersection just as the light turned red…stopping in front of my camera and tripod that was pointed at a subject across the street.
The driver, upon realizing that her bus was blocking my camera angle, opened the bus door, smiled and asked, “I’m sorry, am I in the way of your camera? Would you like me to back up?”
