POST

Sandstone Towers and Arches

Tuesday January 11th, 2011

While many of us were spending our Novembers driving back and forth from the mall, Tim Kemple was in a Land Cruiser trekking through the remote deserts of Chad. When I returned from my vacation, I saw the photos Tim brought back to his home base of Salt Lake City, and I knew I had to share them here.

In a recent blog post, Tim describes the adventurous assignment for The North Face that took him to the Ennedi Plateau in Northeastern Chad. The Ennedi Plateau is the home of an interesting variety of tiger which may or may not exist, but Tim was not searching for this tiger. Instead, the plan was to drive 1,000 kilometers “across the barren desert from the capital city of Chad N’Djamena” with a team of athletes who would climb the sandstone towers and arches emerging from the Sahara. A video of the drive, though probably not all of it, is provided below.

It must have been quite a relief, after the drive, to see these structures in the distance.

The most impressive image is a panoramic Tim put together; a small version is reproduced below, but you’ll have to click on it to get the full view.

Tim was traveling with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk, members of his collective group Camp4. Camp4 has a fascinating approach, but they avoid describing it in words. To learn more, you’ll have to check out their video.
