Where You Work

Thursday February 10th, 2011

Courtesy of the inquisitive mind of Kate Donnelly, proprietor of the great website from the desk of…, we’ve got a little insight into the way our Austin photographers Casey Dunn and Jay B Sauceda get their work done.

Casey burns the midnight oil at a desk with an abundance of pencils and a collection of Life Magazine covers. And, of course, when he burns too hot, there’s a fan on the desk.

Jay B describes his routine more in-depth:

For days at the studio I like knocking out all of the boring stuff like emails and organizing in the morning. Lunch is normally the point after which I start doing the creative business. Earlier in the week I’ll end up working late in to the evening. On shoot days though I’m at the whim of the project so will get started whenever necessary.

It’s not hard to see why he is so effective. After all, his desk has two monitors, a space shuttle, and cowboy boots at the ready. Though anyone could be productive in such a carefully constructed environment, only Jay B is able to use those cowboy boots to take pictures of actual cowboys.

It’s also fascinating to take a look at the desks of some other people, including famous ones. For example, design giant Milton Glaser claims he has worked the same way at his desk for the past 60 years! I also enjoy the desk of Jessica Hische, which just seems like exactly the kind of desk a typographer would have.

These desks contrast quite markedly with the desks we discovered recently thanks to Gabriela Herman, who famously took pictures of bloggers doing their work. All the bloggers seem to be up late, and have very determined expressions. A notable entry was WM’s Rachel Hulin. I can’t see her decor in any kind of detail, but I do admire the psychedelic lamp.
