Portraits at Noon
Thursday March 17th, 2011
I always enjoy the ambitious portrait aggregations our photographers occasionally challenge themselves with. Most recently we took a look at Max Hirshfeld’s One Shot; now we can add Porter Gifford‘s Portraits at Noon to the list. The project involved doing a portrait of someone—anyone—at noon, or close to noon, every day for a year. Porter writes,
The endeavor began as an exercise created to force myself out and about with my camera on a regular basis, and ended up becoming a kind of cool reflection of my life.
I photographed lots of family, friends and neighbors along the way, but mostly total strangers, who, funnily enough, rarely said “no” to my request to take their picture—only two people in the entire year.
He has posted all 365 images on his website. As usual, the range of people and activities represented in a project of this scope is impressive—in a way, it gives reason to rethink the phrase “ordinary people.”
Included in the array is a Wonderful Machine-themed portrait. See if you can spot it.
