New York and Lucia
Monday September 19th, 2011
Lucia Pang has only been a professional photographer for two years. However, her young, flirty, sophisticated hipster approach to fashion photography stands out and has garnered her much attention. What’s she’s accomplished in such a small amount of time is quite impressive, even more so when you realize that she’s only 17 years old. Yes, that’s right, Lucia is commercial and editorial fashion photographer and a high schooler. According to Lucia, juggling school, teenage life, and a professional career is “pretty hard.”

One of Lucia’s most recent accomplishments is being chosen by Tumblr to cover New York Fashion Week. Lucia was picked to be among just 20 notable bloggers—ranging from fashion photographers, to makeup artists, to style writers—to fly to New York and attend the highly anticipated runway shows. Lucia was understandably excited, even more so by the fact that her assignment allowed her much creative freedom.

Lucia found Fashion Week to be both “fast paced and hectic,” much like the city it’s held in. Normally a more editorial fashion shooter, this was Lucia’s first foray into shooting runway, and her fist time ever at Fashion Week,
Shooting runway is fairly different from editorials. You shoot what you’re given, work with lighting you’re given and from the best angles you can get. It’s a lot less control, but most of the time what you’re given works. I’m also adjusting to settings I hardly use on my camera when I shoot back in Australia.

Wanting to take full advantage of the week, Lucia made sure not to miss a single opportunity. When she wasn’t at a show, she was exploring and photographing the city and snapping model test shoots. She also made sure to go backstage at every available chance. Lucia found it quite interesting to see how the shows and clothes were put together, especially since, “I’m never satisfied just looking at the final product, I like to know what makes it what it is. We were all lucky to meet people such as Nina Garcia, Oscar de la Renta, Coco Rocha and more.”
Lucia loved every minute of her Fashion Week experience, and came away with some great photos and memories. She’s also caught the Big Apple bug, stating, “New York is a fantastic place and I can’t wait until I’m back again.”
