Print Mailer: Bam!

So long summer, nice knowing ya…because September is here! But wait a minute, here at Wonderful Machine we wanted to extend the heat of summer by bringing you down to New Orleans to show off our latest print mailer—which we sent to clients across North America. Printed by Modern Postcard and photographed by New Orleans-based photographer, Daymon Gardner, it features an inspiring portrait of snare drum player, Samuel “Lil Sammy” Cyrus, feeling the music. I asked Daymon to fill me in on the shot:
The image and the others in the series were done for a local brass band called Hot 8. We shot by the levee in the lower 9th ward in extreme heat, nothing new for these guys though, as sweat is a given at all of their shows. The band has epitomized New Orleans street music for over a decade. They play the traditional Second Line parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, infusing their performances with the funk and energy that makes New Orleans music loved around the world. The idea for the shoot was simple, portraits of each member on white while capturing the energy of their music. The photographs went on to be published as part of one of the band’s albums and used as promotional material.
