Modern Postcard Calendar

Thursday January 12th, 2012

By Peter Clark

Back in early November, Wendy Batara, the Marketing Program Manager for Modern Postcard came to us with an idea to use our photographers’ images in their upcoming 2012 12-month calendar. The calendar would be sent out to 5,000 loyal Modern Postcard clients across the country—ranging from corporate firms to small businesses, young, old, mom & pop shops to high-end retail and services, artists and non-profits. We jumped at the chance for such a great opportunity to feature and promote our photographers! Modern Postcard was pretty open to what imagery to use, but wanted us to concentrate on a few certain specialties–landscape, fine art, animals, humor, and adventure work—with a good balance of cool and tasteful imagery, but without it being boring.

With those parameters in mind, I made a large amount of selections myself, as I usually do when creating print promotions. I then sat down with our photo editors and slimmed it down to 13 images to consider (12 months and one cover photo). We made a good effort to make sure all the images worked together as cohesive group of imagery.

After taking a look at what we had sent over, Wendy and her team gave us some suggestions. I meet with the photo editors again to rework our selects. This process of editing went on a few more rounds, eventually just ending between Wendy and myself. After a couple last minute tweaks, we settled on a final selection for the cover and each month—one everyone was happy with. The end product was a beautiful looking/functional promotional piece for both Modern Postcard and Wonderful Machine.
