Web Ads: Adsoftheworld.com

Tuesday January 3rd, 2012

Another month, another round of web ads across the internet! For December, we headed back over to Adsoftheworld.com since our last set of ads on their site were so successful. In case you haven’t heard of it before, Ads of The World is a social site for advertising creatives to post recent work from around the globe. It’s one of the most popular websites for creative professionals and a source of inspiration for many of them.

This month we helped inspire art directors, art buyers and photo editors with six unique images. Check them out below along with a little background on each photo:

Steve Temple / Portland
This shot was made for my portfolio, but unlike the rest of the images I was making, this one didn’t feature a product created by a company I wanted to target. Instead, I wanted to photograph a Polaroid camera that belonged to my wife’s late father. He passed far to soon during the summer of 2009. He loved photography and as a tribute to his passion I wanted to photograph his classic Polaroid camera. As you can tell, the camera is in great condition and still works to this day.

Kenny Johnson / Kansas City
This was a collaboration with Kansas City magazine. The idea was to shoot models in swimsuits actually in the water.  So to put it simply, I got the underwater housing and we put the models n the water.

Dero Sanford / Little Rock
This was for the Tunica Museum in Mississippi. They wanted architecture images as well as people viewing the exhibits. This shoot was quite a big production. There was a video crew shooting out of a helicopter, 50 models, a steamboat on the river, and millions of mosquitoes that could have sucked a cow dry. I wanted to get there early before the crew arrived. I knew the metal mesh would give a strong glare on the building so I shot it before sunrise.

Martin Bauendahl / Germany
This was personal work for me that was inspired by the Islamic tradition of women wearing burkas.

Troy Stains / Atlanta
Originally the Matador outfit was rented for a shoot I was doing for a band. It was shoot on a Saturday and I had the outfit till Monday. The idea of a Matador in the off season came to me and I soon had a series of shot ideas to illustrate a day in the life of an out-of-work Matador. I bought some red tights and ballet flats and fooled my friend Jonathan Kelso into being the matador. We started early on Sunday and just went for it. Kelso lives pretty close to Grant Park, which is where the turtle-toro shot was made. At first we tried the shot with actual joggers in the park but it looked dumb, then I remembered the dolphin and turtle statues by the pool…The idea of a guy practicing his bullfighting technique with a cement turtle: ridiculous.

Gaszton Gal / Los Angeles

This image of the Bertoia Diamond Lounge was personal work. I’ve been wanting to create a body of work of modern furniture to promote myself with. Last October, I had a last minute opportunity to spend a few hours with half dozen mid-century modern furniture pieces. With the simplicity of the design in mind—less is more sort of thinking—I decided to use just one light with a beauty dish and some fill cards. They’re B&W for the same reason. You can read more about the project here.

Can You See the Snow In These Photos?

Tuesday May 4th, 2010

I couldn’t either. Dero Sanford had to shoot a “summer” campaign for the Iowa Department of Economical Development ad campaign below. Problem was, it was January and he was shooting in the Midwest. So what did he do to overcome the minus-30 degree weather and 2 feet of snow?

He told the client he could do it, to start. And then he relied on the expertise of his producer, who found an indoor botanical garden in Des Moines.

I thought that was clever, especially in these days of stock backgrounds and compositing.

Dero is hard to pin down, style wise, as he does well in an abundance of specialties. I usually steer photographers away from being everything to everyone, but I think it’s working for him in a smaller market for now (he’s in Little Rock. A few more examples of his work:
