Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based portrait photographer David E. Jackson has been working with Bound by Blood Clothing for two years, photographing their lookbooks each season. This time around, David and his crew did something a little different, producing a video lookbook for BBB’s Summer 2013 line.
The goal was to create a video plot that lined up with BBB’s mission statement, which is as such:
In the face of our deep divisions, our flags, our borders and our politics serve to turn us against each other. These are the times we must heed a call to action. A call to our great orators to give a voice to the voiceless. A call to our great authors to write the next chapter of our story. A call to our great artists to paint a beautiful future. On this, our planet, and in this, our time, let us set aside our differences. United, we share our most common element. We are human. WE ARE BOUND BY BLOOD.
David E. Jackson explained the decision to shoot motion, saying:
We viewed this as an opportunity to bring the video side of our company to light and create a visually compelling, lifestyle-oriented ad that fits well with our own brand. [Jason (BBB owner and designer)] instantly supported the idea and we got to work storyboarding, sketching, location scouting and casting our heroes.
The shoot presented some challenges, as the crew worked on a tight budget. Using the resources at his fingertips and the help of friends, family and colleagues, David got to work. Because of the budget and time constraints, each shot needed to be completed quickly and almost perfectly every time. The crew shot on several different days to catch an evening sun and dusk look to each of the shots.
Because David E. Jackson and his crew had shot quite a bit of motion prior to this project, they were able to put it together quickly and saw it as an “opportunity to build [their] reel.” David said that he discovered a new love for shooting lifestyle oriented work through this project, both still and now video.

Jason, BBB designer and owner, loved the final product and said that “it fit exactly into the brand, the mission statement and the overall mood of the clothing line.”
David was equally happy with the result, saying “the video had the exact raw feel and realness in emotion I was seeking from the beginning of this project.”
